Pretty, stylish, and only 24 years old, Dania Navarro stood out among the speakers at the DLSU Young Multimedia and Graphic Designers' Summit. Not only was she the only female, but she was also the youngest speaker at the summit held on March 2.
Just one year after graduating with a degree in Information Design, Navarro was featured in 2011 as one of the country's breakthrough young designers in MEGA Magazine. In the same year, her shoes were described in Preview magazine as "architectural works of art."
Her college thesis, a hand-drawn Bible, won her the Loyola Schools Award for the Arts, the Dean’s Award for graphic design 2010, as well as the Top Award (Magenta Trophy, student category) at the Philippine Graphic Design Awards 2012.
Redesigning the Bible was not simply a matter of decorating it. By interviewing kids in the youth ministry of her church, Navarro identified the top five problems when using the Bible.
They said the chapters and verses were difficult to find, the paper was too thin, it was boring, the passages were hard to understand, there weren't enough bookmarks, and there was no space for notes.
As a result, the redesigned Bible was thicker than a projector, with five bookmarks, info sheets in between pages, footnotes, and plenty of drawings.
In retrospect, Navarro felt it was one of the best works she had ever done. "I really learned a lot from it. Kahit mahirap, now I'm so happy I accepted the challenge," she said.
